1981年农历九月初一，宏船长老发起创办光明山普觉禅寺“金刚法会”。这个是禅寺首个创办的会员组织，之后发展成现在的护法组。
金刚法会缘起：因宏茂桥新镇刚建峻，为了吸引那里的居民来学佛，宏船长老建议诵金刚经。之后，光名山普觉禅寺便开启一系列活动让公众参与。
创会时由最初由二位法师和九位居士组成，部分名单如下：

这件悬挂在大雄宝殿匾额下的横幅，全手工刺绣，就是为了纪念这个“金刚法会”的创建。
后期组织茁壮扩大增加至133名成员，而现有大约150人参加金刚法会。这个护法组发展至今是一只禅寺里弘扬佛法的生力军。
On the lunar 1st day of the 9th month in 1981, Venerable Seck Hong Choon founded Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery’s Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā (Sanskrit: Diamond; Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra being Diamond Sūtra) Puja Group. This is the first ever member group started by the monastery which later evolved to become the monastery’s current day Volunteer Group.
Origination of the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Puja Group: As the new town of Ang Mo Kio was just setting up within the monastery’s neighbourhood, Venerable Hong Choon initiated the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra puja to attract the interest of the new dwellers to the Buddha’s teachings. Thereafter, the monastery began a series of activities open to the public for participation.
The commencement of the group started with two Venerables and nine lay people, with names of some of the people as below:
1. Venerable Hong Choon
2. Venerable Kwang Rong
3. Li Guo Ren
4. Zeng Wen Fa
5. Wang Hua Ping
6. Xie Jin Fa
7. He Yu Zan
8. Su Han Shui

This fully hand embroidered banner hung underneath the inscribed board of the Hall of Great Strength previously, commemorating the inception of this Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Puja Group.
The group later went on to grow from strength to strength, expanding from 133 members to about 150 people joining in the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā puja ceremony presently. The Volunteer Group remains a strong pillar group until today in supporting the monastery’s Buddha Dharma propagation efforts.
