Since the founding of the monastery, Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery had conducted many kinds of puja ceremonies and each kind of ceremony had its own style of tablecloths used.
The collection of tablecloths in the monastery are all exquisitely hand-sewn and largely custom made from embroidery workshops in southern China. Today the monastery has over 60 pieces of such embroidered works in total, with the craft work spanning from the 1920s to the 1980s.
Embroidered tablecloths used by Chinese monasteries typically use silk and golden threads to create completed pieces portraying lifelike imagey. The embroidered designs are inspired by Chinese Buddhism with motifs such as Boddhisatvas, people in veneration, images of dragons, phoenixes, white cranes, flowers, birds, and so on.
In the current age of industrialisation, these tablecloths are a precious collection of Buddhist art, for its detailed embroidery craftsmanship distinct to southern China.
