This large chime found in Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, dating back to 1922, commemorates the building of the physical premise of the monastery.
In 1922, local layman devotee, Mr Zheng Yu Sheng (hanyu pinyin translated), donated the parcel of land on Bright Hill Road to the founding Abbot, Venerable Sik Zhuan Dao, to build the physical premise of the monastery. To commemorate this joyous occasion, Mr Zheng custom-made this large chime from a ‘Wu Da Fang artisan workshop’ located in Hangzhou, China. The exact characters of the name of the workshop, and date and year of the manufacture can be found legibly engraved on the underside of the chime.
With the passage of time, the large chime is no longer in use however its existence today reminds all the spirit of ‘dāna’ (Sanskrit: generosity) and ‘maitrī’ (Sanskrit: compassion).
